Perkinsville Agate
Perkinsville, Arizona lies roughly halfway between
the towns of Chino Valley and Jerome. Don't look for a town there,
because there isn't one. I believe Perkinsville was a train
stop at one time.
The best way to get to the Perkinsville collecting site is to
take the main street through Jerome, and turn off on Perkinsville Road,
which intersects the main street next to the Jerome Fire Station. This
road quickly becomes a miserable, rough, dusty one lane road. Drive for several
miles, until you come to the place where the high power lines cross the
road. Park, and examine the road cut running down the hill for agates.
There is plenty of agate to be had in this area. The problem
is, the vast majority of it is not worth cutting. Be selective in your
rockhounding, and still be prepared to get (if you're lucky) a 10% yield
when you slab it.
Although most of the agate from this site is junk, the best of
it is unique. Look for unusual patterns, and bold colors of white, yellow,
red and orange. A couple of examples of Perkinsville agates worth
keeping can be seen below.
